Leadership

This program is about leaders, both those who have led us, and those that we aspire to be. We explore the characteristics that we find most important in a good leader, and examine the importance of trust in the leader-follower relationship.

Member Preparation

In preparation for this session, read the following quotes and spend some time thinking about times in your own life when you followed a leader, or when you lead others.

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."  – John Quincy Adams

"A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go, but ought to be." – Rosalynn Carter

"One of the best ways to persuade others is with your ears—by listening to them." - Dean Rusk, U.S. Secretary of State

These questions provide ways you may want to approach this topic. Remember to focus on just one or two of the questions, if you choose to use them, as this will allow you to explore the topic in more depth.

  • Who are some leaders that you've followed? How deeply did you trust them? What was the basis of your trust? What did you learn from them about leading well?
  • When, where, how have you been a leader? Who followed you, how deeply did they trust you, on what basis?
