Race and Class

This program is about race and class. We explore our own experiences with race and/or socio-economic class differences, and discuss whether our church or other organizations provide opportunities to work together with a diverse group of people.

Member Preparation

"Wherever there is unity in diversity, then we are free to be ourselves; it cannot be done in isolation; we need each other." – Madeleine L’Engle, Circle of Quiet

"Is God not the One who shows no partiality to princes and does not favor the rich over the poor, for they are all the work of his hands?"  – Job 34.18-19

In preparation for this session, think about your feelings and experiences with race and class. These questions provide ways you may want to approach this topic. Remember to focus on just one or two of the questions, if you choose to use them, as this will allow you to explore the topic in more depth.

  • At what point in your life did you become aware of race? Of your own race? At what point did you become aware of class? Of your own class?
  • Have your views of race or class changed over time?
  • Are you in the same class or socioeconomic group as an adult, that you were as a child growing up in your family?
  • What is your personal experience relating to people of another race or class than your own?
  • Has a church or other organization enabled you to get to know others of a different race or class?
