First Steps
This session is the first of four introductory sessions for a Small Group. In addition to exploring the topic of First Steps, it also includes time for welcoming members to Small Group Ministry and discussing Ground Rules. To help new facilitators get started, we have included a fully annotated version of the Order of Service in this session's Facilitator Notes.
We designed this series of introductory to be used in the following order: First Steps, Connections, Spiritual Histories, and Dreams and the Future.
Member Preparation
In preparation for this session, think about some of the important endeavors or projects in your life, and try to remember how you got started.
These questions provide ways you may want to approach this topic. Remember to focus on just one or two of the questions, if you choose to use them, as this will allow you to explore the topic in more depth.
- We (usually) learn to crawl before we walk, and to walk before we run. As you take your first steps with this small group, what hopes, fears, beliefs, and dreams do you hold in your heart?
- Many projects or endeavors can be broken down into first steps, the middle walk, and final steps. Which is easiest for you? Which is hardest for you? Why do you think this is?
- We often turn to others when we take our first steps – who are the people you often turn to, and what do you expect of them during such times?
